Picture this: I’m floating over South Africa in a hot air balloon, feeling very adventurous and slightly windswept. We touchdown on a game farm for breakfast—already a magical morning—when I spot the cutest little baby giraffe. Naturally, I wander off for a closer look because… who wouldn’t?
Suddenly, I notice the other guests frantically waving their arms. At first, I think they’re just excited. Nope. They’re warning me.
I freeze. Something is behind me. I can feel it. The hairs on the back of my neck are doing their best impression of a porcupine. Whatever it is, it’s big… and it’s chewing.
Then, ever so slowly, a long purple tongue slides into view over my right shoulder. I glance sideways and there they are—those gorgeous, fluttery eyelashes. Honestly, mascara companies could only dream of lashes like that.
I know better than to move, so what do I do? I whisper the softest “Hello,” say a quick silent prayer, and compliment her on her beautiful baby. Thankfully, Mama Giraffe approves. She lifts her head with regal grace and strolls back to her little one.
Did I nearly pee my pants? Absolutely. Did I actually? Miraculously, no.
And that, my friends, is how Bob the Giraffe came to be. Bob has just finished college and is a bit bushed, but he was a stellar student with a simple mantra: Never Give Up.
If you’d like to make your own Bob, the pattern is available as a free PDF on the Hobbii site. The designer is PifPaf.
I used a 2.5 mm hook and New Fashion DK by Wool craft (100% acrylic, 100g). It was my first time using this yarn, and I was thrilled with how beautifully Bob turned out.
